Coupon Terminology

A cheat sheet to help you understand common terms used by the coupon community.

Have you ever come across an Instagram or Facebook account dedicated to couponing and thought to yourself, “What on earth are they talking about?” We’ve all been there.  Couponers have their own language and it can be very confusing. Today’s blog post is dedicated to deciphering the most common terms and abbreviations used throughout the couponing community. Find our breakdowns below.

Terms & Abbreviations

  • BD – Breakdown. This term is often used to describe in full how someone got a great deal.

  • BOGO – Buy one get one free.  Often used in regards to coupons or in store offers. Buy one product get another of equal or lesser value for free.

  • FPC – Full price coupon / free product coupon. A favourite coupon, this will cover the full price of an item.

  • GOA = Good on any. A coupon that can be used on any variety from a specific brand.  For example a Royale GOA coupon could be used on bathroom tissue, facial tissue, or paper towel. 

  • HVC = High value coupon.  These typically cover more than half the cost of a product, but can range in pricing.  Think $4 and up.

  • IPC = Internet print coupon.  Coupons found on the internet that you can print!

  • ISO = In store offer.  A deal that is not advertised in flyers but can be found in stores. These may be location specific.

  • MM = Money maker.  Some coupons or cashback offers can be worth more than the product you are purchasing.  In these cases we refer to these deals as money makers! Note, not all stores will give overage on coupons.

  • NLA = No longer available.  We refer to these when a great deal is found but the coupon is no longer available for print, or in store.  Only those that still have a valid coupon can take advantage.

  • OOP = Out of pocket.  This is the amount of money you will be out of pocket after doing a deal (after coupons).

  • PM = Price match.  You know this one! When you price match a flyer sale from one store.

  • PO = Personal offer.  These are most often referred to for PC Optimum points offers, a personal offer is a point offer exclusive to you and on your account.

  • WUB/WYB – When you buy.  Often used in a sentence such as “Save $1 WUB2”, meaning save $1 when you buy 2 items.

  • WUS/WYS – When you spend. Some deals require a minimum spend, for example earn $10 back in PC points WUS $20.

Stores / Apps

  • Co51 – Checkout 51. This is a common cashback platform. 

  • GT = Giant Tiger

  • ISD = Independent

  • FB = Food Basics

  • LD = London Drugs

  • PCX = PC Express App

  • RCSS = Real Canadian Superstore

  • SDM = Shoppers Drug Mart

  • WM = Walmart
