March Break Activities

Inexpensive options for some family fun!

March Break is officially here and we couldn’t be more excited, personally, to spend some time with our little ones.  But let’s be real, it’s also super stressful! Money is especially tight these days and so many families can’t afford some of the popular activities kids know and love.  This post is dedicated to just a small compilation of our top picks of free or inexpensive activities families can do this week to keep their kids entertained.

Feeling crafty? Hooray Heroes has a ton of fun free resources you can print at home! These include personalized colouring books, calendars, and love coupons (so cute!). Check out their section titled “Freebies” located on their main website here.

Adventure Walks. Our toddlers LOVE these.  Pack a backpack with some snacks and head outdoors! Just remember to dress appropriately.  An added activity we enjoy; create a checklist of items your kids can easily find or use one already created online.  We love this one by Lakeshore Learning.  Tip, add a few funny ones to keep them on their toes! Witches, zombies and skeletons are a hit on our walks and always seem to be found lurking near a dark tree.

At home baking or meal prep! Lots of kids love to cook but don’t have much opportunity during the week to participate. This week is a great time to help your little ones tackle a new skill and learn to help you in the kitchen.  Cooking can be as simple as toast with butter to prepping a full blown meal.  You know your kids (and your own) taste and patience levels best, so pick recipes that work for you.  Amazon sells some great kids cooking utensils, (we personally love Curious Chef) and this set is a great investment if your kid is showing signs of interest.

Movie Night! Let’s be real, everyone is doing these but why not make movie night extra special this week! Grab all of your extra pillows and blankets and create a super cozy spread.  Don’t forget to add on some fun snacks, you can find tons of coupons linked in our Education tab here (and of course flyer sale matches to those on our app).  Have a theme?  Dress up! Ours love anything superhero related; some Spiderman jammies paired with a small blanket (for a cape) and some construction paper wristbands make for the perfect DIY costume. We love these free printable masks from Printablee.  Do this activity earlier in the day to build up excitement and make a whole day of fun out of it!

DIY Indoor Obstacle course (on a budget!).  No joke, this one is a hit! If you have party streamer paper take lengths of it and tape it throughout your hallway, spanning from one wall across to the other to create a web.  Have your kids try to maneuver their way through it without touching.  Toilet paper makes a great alternative, if you’re lacking in the party supply department.  We use painters tape (masking tape would work too) along the floor to create a pathway they either have to hop, tip-toe or zigzag across.  Toddlers especially love this one! You can make it as hard or as easy as you like depending on age. Don’t forget to get them to help construct! Part of the fun is seeing what ideas they can come up with.

Over at Savin Groceries we hope all families can enjoy the week together, regardless of budget.  Don’t forget to check out our app, available online and on Google Play!
