Increasing Costs in Canada

How coupons and money saving tools can help

We started 2022 off with a Food Price Report estimating another record high increase in grocery costs.  In early March the Bank of Canada began to raise interest rates, the first time since 2018 and a move that’s expected to be only the first of a series of small increases.

This past week Statistics Canada reported that the annual inflation rate in February was 5.7 per cent; a 30-year high and inflation rate we haven’t seen since 1991.

With household debt surging Canadian’s are aware of the looming impact inflation will have on their ability to afford essential items like food, housing and energy.  Significantly, rising costs are putting food security and the ability for Canadian’s to afford staple household items at risk.  While we know Canadian’s are looking for ways to save money (including using coupons) so many just don’t have the time to invest into learning how.

When it comes to accessible and affordable groceries we at Savin Groceries App are passionate that every Canadian has the right to food, and that every Canadian should be able to afford everyday grocery items without sacrificing other needs. As part of our platform we strive to educate Canadians through our website on how they can save money on groceries.  Our app, the Savin Groceries App, is dedicated to streamlining this process.

In addition to our app, other money saving apps we can recommend include;

  • Flashfood – this app partners with grocers to offer discounted pricing on items nearing their best before dates.  You can see what’s in stock online using the app, and purchase with the click of a button with pick up in store.

  • Digital flyer apps (Flipp, Rebee, Save.ca) – There are a huge number of digital flyer apps available.  These allow you to see current flyer sales available in your area.  You can also price match using these online tools at stores that will allow it.

  • Cashback apps / websites (Checkout 51, Caddle, Eclipsa, Go Coupons, Websaver) – Cashback apps are becoming more and more popular.  These are simple to use and often have great offers on everyday items.  We recommend you start with one and see how comfortable you are using it. Try getting cashback on one item to learn the ropes.  Once you master these your confidence and ability to save money on groceries will only grow.

For those in need of resources we encourage you to reach out to your local Food Banks.  These facilities are becoming more depended on and are critical to so many Canadian families.  For those that can afford it, consider donating to these organizations.  Check out the Savin Groceries App for some great money saving grocery deals you can do for yourself, or you can donate.
